Living with Purpose, Choosing with Vision

For students in Years 8 to 11, the coming months will involve subject selection for 2027 and Year 10 and Year 11 students will also have the opportunity to discern whether they wish to apply for the 2027 Student Leadership Team. These are important milestones in each girl’s high school journey, requiring thoughtful reflection about personal strengths, interests, talents, aspirations and goals.

As all OLSHies explore the many opportunities available to them, I encourage them to approach these decisions with both curiosity and honesty. Take the time to become informed, seek advice, ask questions, and reflect on the ways you learn best. Consider not only what you enjoy, but also where your skills and passions may lead you in the future. Equally important is the courage to embrace new opportunities and challenge yourself beyond your comfort zone.

One comment I often hear from girls considering leadership is, “I’m not sure I’ll apply because I probably won’t get it.” My response is always the same: there is enormous value in the journey itself. The process of preparing an application, reflecting on your values and strengths, articulating your vision, and presenting yourself as a leader are all powerful learning experiences. Whether or not a leadership position is ultimately secured, the skills developed through the process are invaluable and will serve all girls well beyond their school years.

The same can be said for subject selection. These choices are not simply about filling a timetable for next year. They are opportunities to explore interests, develop capabilities, and create pathways that align with future aspirations. The most successful decisions are those made with purpose and self-awareness, rather than because friends are making the same choices, there is perceived status attached to a particular pathway, or simply because it seems like the easiest option.

At OLSH College, we believe that every girl has unique gifts and talents to offer. Term 3 is an opportunity to reflect deeply on how those gifts can be nurtured and developed. I encourage all OLSHies to embrace the opportunities before them, be brave in pursuing their ambitions, and make choices that reflect who they are and who they hope to become.

The decisions made this term are not simply about next year. They are about developing the confidence, resilience, self-awareness and leadership skills that will support all girls long after they leave the school gates. By living with purpose and choosing with vision, OLSH girls can take meaningful steps towards a future that is both fulfilling and uniquely their own.
